The Vacuum Circuit Breaker (VCB) is a sophisticated switching device designed for the operational switching (on-off operations) of individual circuits or electrical equipment under both normal and emergency conditions. It can be controlled manually or automatically and is specifically engineered for medium voltage applications exceeding 1 kV. The VCB operates on the principle of quenching the electric arc that forms when the contacts open within a high-vacuum environment. This vacuum gap ensures rapid and reliable arc extinction, making VCBs highly effective for various electrical switching tasks.

 

The initial development of vacuum circuit breakers drew inspiration from oil circuit breakers, utilizing bulky spring-motor actuators to open the contacts. These early drives were characterized by a large number of friction-loaded components, which significantly reduced their operational lifespan and reliability. The early developers of vacuum circuit breakers did not fully capitalize on the unique advantages of vacuum technology, such as the ability to operate with small gaps, which could have enabled the use of more energy-efficient actuators.

 

Around 1988, engineer introduced a groundbreaking innovation by developing an electromagnetic drive that was coaxially aligned with the movable contact within the vacuum arc quenching chamber. This design eliminated the need for friction-loaded assemblies, leading to a radical increase in the resource and reliability of the switches. Additionally, this configuration allowed for a significant reduction in the physical dimensions of the devices.

The electromagnetic drive design is maintenance-free, which, combined with the inherently maintenance-free nature of the vacuum interrupter chambers (commonly referred to as bottles), enables the production of devices that require no maintenance throughout their entire service life, typically spanning 30 years. This maintenance-free characteristic is a significant advantage, reducing operational costs and ensuring consistent performance over an extended period.
